Food sustainability: new sweetener from fruit waste

(Sustainabilityenvironment.com) – Is food sustainability only a trend? Not for Fooditive, a Dutch company that has made great steps in short time. Fooditive is committed to plant-based ingredients: it provides innovative and natural ingredients to food and beverage producers.

WAITING FOR THE NOVEL FOOD LICENSE

Fooditive is in the process of obtaining a novel food license from EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) for its new sweetener.

The sweetener derives from fruits waste. Fooditive recycles a raw material considered side stream, of third choice, by producers of fruit juices or good but aesthetically ugly fruit that cannot find any outlet in the markets.

The improved production allows to produce up to 30 tons of sweetener every week from 83 tons of apples, pears, cherries and bananas.

A great solution to minimize waste is to increase the food sustainability facts of production chains by offering competitive prices.

A REVOLUTION IN SWEETENERS’ FIELD

This sweetener is the start of an actual revolution in the field of sweeteners nonetheless a valid alternative to sugar.

The first step that Fooditive took, was to propose the sweetener to the food industry with the aim of research and development.

After three years of testing, Fooditive presented to EFSA the application for 5-D-keto-fructose. The sweetener is developed with biorefining techniques.

According to Report Linker study, Fooditive is the only startup able to compete with global participants in the food sweeteners industry.

FOOD SUSTAINABILITY IS NOT ONLY MARKET

Fooditive was born in Rotterdam in 2018 thanks to the idea of a 17 year old Jordanian boy, Moayad Abushokhedim: “Sustainability is in our DNA; we do not consider it only a marketing tool. Our mission is to develop plant-based ingredients that can support a healthy body and a healthy environment”.

The aim is to make the world a healthier and more sustainable place to live and Fooditive is working hard to achieve social, economic and environmental sustainability.

Eleven years of researching brought to a 100% natural sweetener that has the taste and functions of sugar, is healthy for people and doesn’t harm the planet.

The company has received many awards for its innovative and sustainable ideas, examples of circular economy, and it is also among the finalists of Index Award 2021.

Fooditive team is aware that the path is long and challenging, however EFSA approval will definitely be a trump card that will attract the interest of investors and food companies, of which it aspires to become partners.
