A 40-ton truck that can refuel in just 8 minutes and cover at least 600 km—or extend its range to 900 km with a 12-minute refill. These figures stem from a groundbreaking agreement between Toyota Motor Europe, Hydrogen Refueling Solutions, and ENGIE, aiming to introduce a new generation of efficient hydrogen refueling systems.

Hydrogen: The Next Step in Truck Electrification

Beyond the electrification of heavy-duty vehicles, alternative low-emission fuels such as hydrogen are playing a key role in the transition to sustainable transportation. This initiative is part of RHeaDHy, an EU-funded project designed to accelerate the expansion of hydrogen refueling infrastructure across Europe. The key challenge is developing high-flow dispensers capable of rapidly refueling both light-duty and heavy-duty fuel cell vehicles.

Hydrogen Refueling Every 200 km

Toyota’s Twin Mid Flow technology introduces a dual high-flow nozzle system, enabling hydrogen dispensers to refuel heavy-duty vehicles in under 10 minutes and light-duty vehicles in less than 5 minutes. This innovation eliminates the need for separate dispenser types, reducing infrastructure costs and simplifying station layouts. The goal is to deploy publicly accessible hydrogen refueling stations every 200 km along the EU’s TEN-T transport corridors by 2030.

“The development of Twin Mid Flow technology marks another step in our commitment to accelerating hydrogen ecosystems. We are excited about this new partnership,”
Thiebault Paquet, Vice President R&D, Toyota Motor Europe

As part of the agreement, Toyota will provide a testing platform and a truck equipped with Twin Mid Flow technology, while Hydrogen Refueling Solutions and ENGIE will develop and test next-generation hydrogen refueling stations, set to launch in Q4 2025.

“This strategic partnership with Toyota Motor Europe and ENGIE represents a major leap forward in hydrogen refueling innovation. By combining our expertise, we will accelerate the deployment of hydrogen refueling stations across Europe and globally, reducing refueling time while making stations more accessible and cost-effective,”

The EU’s Hydrogen Infrastructure Initiative

The Refuelling Heavy Duty with very High Flow Hydrogen (RHeaDHy) project, funded by the European Union, focuses on developing new hydrogen refueling protocols. The goal is to enable 700-bar hydrogen trucks to refuel with 100 kg of hydrogen in just 10 minutes, aligning with the EU’s broader strategy to decarbonize freight transport, one of the world’s most polluting sectors.
