E-Mobility Triumphs in Norway: 9 Out of 10 Cars Sold Are Electric

A Record-Breaking Year for E-Mobility in Norway

While countries like Italy and others in Europe wrestle with meeting the EU’s emission reduction targets and remain hesitant about the growth of the EV segment, Norway continues to set groundbreaking records. In 2024, nearly 9 out of 10 cars sold in the Scandinavian nation were electric, driving a 13% overall increase in new car sales compared to 2023.

This remarkable trend stands out even more when compared to the broader European market, where new car registrations remained stable or even declined in key countries like France (-3.7%), Germany (-0.4%), and Italy (-0.2%).

A Unique Success Story Driven by Government Support

It’s important to note that comparing Norway’s EV market to other countries isn’t entirely fair. Oslo’s government has championed e-mobility with aggressive policies, including significant tax exemptions for EVs and generous incentives funded by revenues from the nation’s oil and gas production.

These measures have paid off handsomely, with electric vehicles surpassing internal combustion engines in new car registrations as early as 2017. That same year, Norway set an ambitious goal: to sell only zero-emission vehicles by 2025.

While the target hasn’t been fully achieved yet, Norway is closer than ever. In 2024, EVs accounted for 88.9% of all newly registered cars, totaling 114,400 fully electric vehicles out of 128,691. Including hybrids, the figure climbs above 96%.

The year closed with 9 out of 10 new cars being electric,” stated Norway’s Road Traffic Information Council (OFV). “While the 2025 goal isn’t quite met yet, no other country comes close to such a high percentage of EVs. The share rose from 82.4% in 2023 to 88.9% in 2024.

Tesla Leads the Charge, with Chinese Brands on the Rise

Major automotive brands dominated Norway’s EV sales in 2024. Tesla claimed the top spot with an 18.9% market share, followed by Volkswagen (10.9%), Toyota (10.6%), Volvo (8.6%), and BMW (5.4%).

Chinese automakers BYD and Xpeng are also making headway, ranking 13th and 15th, respectively, and showing significant growth compared to 2023.

We’re now seeing economic stabilization, and many exciting new brands and car models are entering Norway in 2025,” noted OFV Director Solberg Thorsen. If EV incentives remain in place, new car sales can gain even more momentum, helping us achieve the 2025 target. Many of these new models are priced to suit a wide range of budgets.”
